So I’m a Little Slow…

Many thanks to Andrea who launched this site…and my apologizes for being a little slow. I’ve a 10 month old under foot who doesn’t like to sleep much–that’s my excuse for the lack of posts.

Creative outlet, eh? Well, let the games begin. Trouble is, this musician turned mother‘s brain is so full of that wonderful strain of housewifery specifically related to the wee one around her ankles that she has a hard time wrangling the thoughts that float on the outer edges of her consciousness–thoughts about theology, craft, art, music, literature, politics, etc. However, I look forward to where this blog might take us.

So, this is me, saying hello (don’t give up on me) and pledging to post again soon.

Peace.

*Oh, and to whom do I speak about a WordPress tute? I’m seriously intimidated by the interface. Eek!

Encaustic Painting: What is it?

(Posting is a process… Cathy just sent me this to post for her, her paintings are coming soon!! This is a just the intro, so read and be ready!)

What is an Encaustic Painting?
Encaustic is considered one of the most ancient painting mediums in the world. The word “encaustic” comes from the Greek encaustikos, “to burn in,” referring to the process of fusing the layers of paint together. The oldest surviving use is the well-known Fayum portraits painted on tombs from Roman Egypt around 100-350 A.D. After disappearing for much of history, it was revived in the 1950s by Jasper Johns, who is often considered the father of contemporary encaustic painting. He used the medium most famously in his Flags and Target paintings.

Materials and Tools
Encaustic paint is usually made from beeswax, damar resin, and pigment. The beeswax has a relatively low melting point, approximately 150F, and is strained multiple times to remove impurities. Because of this low melting point, damar resin is added, which serves both to raise the melting point to about 165F and to act as a hardening agent, so the encaustic has a slightly enamel end when cool.

Ukelele

So I got one of these for my birthday. I quickly bought a tuner to go along with it. I still can only strum out a few chords. I am not sure if my lack of practice is indicative of my commitment, or of my inability to strum properly but I wonder as to my deep want to learn to play an instrument. As a kid I played the clarinet, I gave it up after middle school once I discovered choir. I loved singing, I sang solos, went to all state, had a grand old time until my sophomore year of college when I took the dreaded “ear training”- the only class I have ever failed, and only then it was on a technicality.  The teacher decided to throw out the whole semester’s grade (I had a B) and only count the final test as your final class grade, since (she reasoned) if you could not demonstrate your skill on the final you didn’t learn the material. Singing doomed me. She thought it would be “nice” of her to play a song we all “knew” for the section of the test where we needed to transpose the notes we heard onto the blank sheet music. Sadly she played “The Phantom of the Opera”. A song which I had sung in choir and as she played the song all I could here was the alto vocal part. I could not concentrate on the instrumental notes. I failed the final because that was half of the test grade. So I failed the class, and as a hurt 19 year old- I quit choir.

I sometimes regret quitting choir. I still dream of joining a choir as an adult, but I find it hard to set aside the time for it. I lugged around a guitar I could barely play in my 20′s. I finally realized I wasn’t going to truly learn and gave it away. But now, at age 34, I find myself with an instrument sitting in my living room again. I had watched a documentary on the ukelele and was attracted to its sound, size, and simplicity. Alas- it still sits there.

So I am thinking I will look for lessons over the summer. Give it a good chance before I decide this life long dream of mine (to actually play an instrument) should find a seat on the shelf of things left undone. Truth is- if I try to learn, I know that (at least) I will know my creative self better. Know my strengths and my weaknesses. After 5 years of grad school I am finding it hard to find my creative rhythm. I have sat down with hopes to create numerous times just to make crap. Seriously- crap.

Sometimes I fear the over-education of your creative self can disable a part of you that you need in order to imbue life in your creative work- discovery, naivite, childlike genius—- that is an important part of who my creative soul is….. right now I am just trying to unearth her.

Craft Collective

So I have ideas, oodles and oodles of ideas. It is a blessing and a curse. I have thought about starting a website to share art lessons (but it’s been done), I have thought about making all my Christmas presents in a year, I have thought about creating a plus-size pattern designing business, one of the longest lasting ones was “Irreverant Pet Portraits” (still think that is brilliant) where I insert family pets into famous artwork, I have thought about becoming a potter and making baby doll head mugs, I have thought about starting a business in the healing arts, I have thought about writing an art how-to book on all my wacky ceramics processes, I have thought about writing and illustrating a children’s book, and I have thought about making a huge series of fantastical cake platters and selling them and calling the business “Sugar”. I have thought about this and so so so so much more. Some of you have heard of my many ideas, sometimes it is hard to keep up with me- I know. In the end, I invariably end up finding something and sticking to it for as long as it takes- almost always this is an art show. I have made several large bodies of work. So usually when it comes to art shows I have immense follow through, not so much apparently when it involves a business.

Most recently I have longed for people to share my ideas with, to vet out the wacky ones, and just to say “You’ve got to see these hand printed curtains on etsy! If only I had the time OR money!” Truth be told I know a lot of amazing and creative people, people all over the country with whom it is difficult to stay in touch with, people whose lives and creative work have inspired me, and with whom I would love to share the creative journey.

So I had an idea- what if I invited those people to share their creative lives with one another on a blog. Gave people I know and trust the keys to the blog where they can come and post great images, thoughts, ideas, or jokes about the things that make them creatively tick.

I thought that was a great idea, and “lo and behold” I had this blog already up (a blog where I originally intended to write deep thoughts about the status of craft in american art mind you- ha! Like I have time for that!) and it had this fabulous name that I still love….. and I decided I would share it.

So here is the deal friends.

1)If you want to join me in posting random and interesting thoughts, finds, ideas, experiences, and creations please e-mail me and my lovely husband will set you up as a user able to log in and post.

2) This is to have fun, to inspire, to spur on— if you in any way feel burdened by this idea- please don’t feel obligated. If I have invited you to this blog it is because I love you and your creative ways- I want what is best for you.

3) There are no rules other than- share and share alike. I only ask that if you find another artist who “rox my sox” (as my sixth grade advisory would say) then link them or site them so they get credit for being awesome.

4) This is an organic hope and journey meant to encourage one another in our creative pursuits, I will be inviting professors, musicians, writers, and artists who also happen to be mommies, wives, business owners, daughters, and friends. We all live busy lives full of rich experience. Each and every creative expression will (hopefully) be valued here. That is not to say we can’t have aesthetic opinions which may be shared, heck I like a good critique- but the role of critic should only be taken on when one is asked to do so. This is a place of encouragement, sharing, wisdom, laughter, and hope. I have no doubt it will be just that.

So without further ado- I will make some posts in an effort to start the sharing. Thanks for considering this journey with me. -A
